This is a beautiful old cemetery. It is a great place to walk around and learn a little about Lawrence's history.
I love walking through Oak Hill especially during sunset. There are so many unique headstones and history to discover. It is also painful to see that it is not as cared for as other cemeteries I have visited. Some of the headstones are broken, toppled, or missing especially in older areas. Many flat headstones are covered in leaves or grass and many times I spend the visit picking up trash or brushing off the covered stones. I know that this lack of care may be due to budget cuts but it's side to see such a historic treasure being allowed to fall victim to time.
The cemetery has implemented a vegetation kill zone around the base of each stone to save money. My grandparents stone has experienced erosion and is starting to slide down the hill. I suppose I'll have to hire someone to build a foundation under the stones to hold them in place. That said I don't suppose I'll move my grandparents.
The use of herbicide around each tombstone has created a circle of mud around each tombstone. Where a hill is involved,it is Oak Hill, the running water is undermining the foundations of the tombstones. This is particularly evident in the southeast corner of cemetery. Many old and beautiful tombstones are leaning over in their mud circle.
Quiet but has a murder of crows and some owls for added atmosphere. Overall a good resting place.
